A friend asked me: if everyone worshipped one god, do you think there would be world peace? Answer: Definitely not if the one god is jesus: We can achieve total peace by either solving all problems (unlikely), or by not trying to solve any problems (silly). But the false presumption here is that peace is desirable. Even if we did achieve peace, a truly peaceful world is probably one where everybody sat at home all day and did nothing. The goal should be civil and rational discourse, not peace. And as long as we insist on debating claims which are not verifiable in reality, there will be unnecessary conflict over what amounts to be opinions. Truly rational discourse depends on the courage to admit what we know and can verify, what we do not know and can not verify, and to do so regardless of how vulnerable this level of honesty makes us feel.
